Beijing, Gizmologi – After officially debuting through a grand launch event held two days ago (14/10), Vivo continues the introduction of its newest flagship line, the X200 Series, which continues to collaborate with ZEISS. Through a separate event, Vivo explained the secret of Vivo's portrait photos being popular in more regions.

Entering the AI era, Vivo is not only continuing to develop computational photography technology, but is also making the photos captured more “human". This was mentioned by Yu Meng, VP of Imaging from vivo. He also said that his party has continued to expand globally since 2014, where now there are more than 700 professional class employees specifically for the R&D team.

“At vivo, we strongly believe in the power of imaging technology, which transcends geographical boundaries and cultural differences. "This technology is a testament to technological innovation, a celebration of human creativity, and a powerful tool for fostering cross-cultural relationships," he explained in a presentation session (15/10).

Together with Li Zhuo, Senior Director of Imaging Product at vivo, vivo also explained the reasons for their success in creating the quality of vivo portrait photos that are popular in all regions. Through the presence of the vivo V Series and of course the vivo X Series, where both lines have collaborated using ZEISS technology.

Li Zhuo explaining the development of vivo's specially designed imaging chip

Li Zhuo explained that Vivo had made quite a lot of efforts to improve the quality of Vivo's portrait photos. Starting from self-designed image processing algorithms, specially designed chips to help camera performance with the vivo V3+ as the latest in the X200 Series, to R&D development centers that are already available in various regions—there are around 7-8 different locations.

According to Vivo, understanding the preferences of each user is very important, including understanding each different culture. For this reason, Vivo has formed a special team to understand users and get more serious feedback. In order to get input that will later be directly implemented into the next Vivo portrait photo algorithm.

Even in a presentation slide, Li Zhuo also provided an example of a Vivo portrait photo that was adjusted to the preferences of users in Southeast Asia. Namely, a photo with brighter and more vibrant colors, as well as an enhancement effect (beauty effect) that looks more natural when activated. Not only in normal photo mode, including portrait photos.

Vivo's portrait photo algorithm has been refined for many types of portrait scenarios. One of them is like a portrait photo with a beach scenario that tends to have the potential to go against the light, aka backlight, to festival portraits that are often taken by users in India, with the excitement of the colors of the lights at night.

Continue Collaborating with ZEISS

In addition to developing its own camera algorithm by strengthening the R&D team and understanding user needs, Vivo also continues to collaborate with ZEISS, perfecting Vivo's portrait photo effects and embedding them in more smartphone variants. To date, there have been more than 20 Vivo smartphones that have been strengthened by ZEISS.

Including the vivo V40 which brings the bokeh effect replicating the ZEISS professional lens, to the vivo X200 Series with a special ZEISS T* coating to reduce flare and make photos clearer in various lighting conditions. Sebastian Dontgen, Head of Mobile Imaging for ZEISS Photonics & Optics, said that both parties will continue to strive to push the boundaries of what is possible with current technology.

The collaboration with ZEISS will last for the long term, so there will still be a number of Vivo smartphones equipped with ZEISS lens technology and effects in the future. In addition to continuously improving the quality and algorithms of photography, Vivo also pays attention to the security aspects of images. In order to prevent misinformation which has increased since the arrival of the AI era.
