Huawei Beats Apple in China's Premium Smartphone Market

Huawei again beats Apple products in China’s premium smartphone market. Precisely at the 618 big shopping festival. JD.com reported that seven out of the top ten best-selling smartphone models are from Chinese producers and priced above CNY 6,000 or around Rp13.4 million. One of them is controlled by Huawei.

This marks a significant shift in the Chinese market which has traditionally seen Apple hold strong in the premium segment. Meanwhile, Apple still secured three places in the top ten rankings.

With products including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Plus. Apart from that, five Huawei products also managed to sell well, such as the Pura 70 (including the Pro, Pro+ and Ultra variants) and the Mate 60 Pro.

Followed by Vivo which managed to win two places with its two folding phones. Specifically, the Vivo X Fold 3 and X 100 Ultra.

Huawei’s dominance is not only in terms of the number of models. Their flagship product, the Mate60 Pro which was launched last August, reportedly has excellent resale value.

Even though the starting price is CNY 6499 or around Rp14.6 million through the Pioneer Program. The phone saw only a slight price reduction on e-commerce platforms, indicating strong consumer confidence in Huawei’s high-end offerings.

This trend can be attributed to several factors. Huawei and other domestic manufacturers have innovated and offer feature-rich phones that compete with or even outperform Apple in some areas.

Second, aggressive pricing strategies, especially during sales periods like the 618, have made these high-end devices more accessible to domestic consumers. Lastly, with ongoing political tensions between China and the US, some consumers may shift their preferences to local brands.

However, Apple is not completely out of the competition. Their decision to lower prices, with the iPhone 15 starting at CNY 4,999 or around Rp. 11.2 million which helps them maintain their existence in the high-end segment.

With Huawei leading the way and other brands like Vivo showing strong potential, consumers now have more exciting options to choose from when it comes to high-end smartphones. This not only puts pressure on Apple to remain competitive, but also signals a potential turning point in the global smartphone landscape.
