AI development is not limited to the United States or popular countries. It can also be done domestically. One of them is the collaboration of PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) which collaborates with the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) to jointly develop an AI-based voice command feature.

Gizmo friends, Hyundai has made many advanced vehicles with the latest technology, including both conventional and electric ones. Starting from Stargazer X to IONIQ 5 which is also updated with Bluelink. Apart from providing remote control via smartphone, voice recognition is also one of its advantages.

The voice commands that can be received by the latest Hyundai vehicles also include recognition in Indonesian. Hyundai and ITB have been collaborating on research since 2023. This research is aimed at collecting data to support the voice command feature.

Bong Kyu Lee, President Director of PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia said that his party was very satisfied with the cooperation that had been established. “We think that by working closely with the Indonesian education and research sector, Hyundai can improve its technology and applications,” he said during an offline event on Wednesday (15/5).

Help Develop Features That Will Be Enjoyed Globally

Furthermore, regarding data collection, this data will later be used by Hyundai as a basis for the interactive voice command feature on the newest Hyundai vehicles in the future. This collaboration is also part of HMMI’s commitment to operating in Indonesia, developing together with the country, one of which is by conducting joint research with academics.

It is believed that the steps taken by HMMI can produce many benefits, especially to improve the industrial ecosystem, especially in the technology sector. “In the future, we hope that collaboration can bring good benefits to all parties and, more importantly, realize the best mobility for Indonesia’s future,” added Bong Kyu Lee.

Meanwhile, Ir. R. Sugeng Joko Sarwono, MT, Ph.D. as Chair of the ITB Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (LPiK) said that his party also continues to strive to become an institution that reflects Indonesia’s locality but remains globally oriented. So that the voice recognition project this time can be developed both with the latest technology, as well as the Indonesian people as technology users.

Not only with academics, Hyundai also collaborates with other parties in the context of development and research, and also continuously carries out training with local suppliers. Through the capability enhancement program, suppliers are trained to increase their component research and development capabilities, until they are certified by Hyundai principals.

HMMI’s Contribution to Indonesia and Product Exports Abroad

PT HMMI itself has been established since 2019 as a manufacturing subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company, located in Kota Deltamas, Bekasi, West Java. The Indonesian factory represents an investment of USD 1.55 billion until 2030. Not only to meet the needs of the local market, it also exports products to other main markets in the Asia Pacific region, the Middle East, Africa, South, Central and North America.

The voice recognition feature in Hyundai vehicles itself is intended to enable drivers to access a number of other features, while remaining focused on driving and paying attention to the road. Several commands can be accessed, such as navigation to certain destinations, access to phone calls, music, and control of a number of vehicle features. Such as opening and closing windows, the trunk door, and even warming up the seats—depending on the availability of features in each vehicle, of course.

Apart from the voice command feature, Hyundai also prioritizes its advanced platform, namely Bluelink. Utilizing a special network, Bluelink allows vehicle owners to check the status of their vehicle remotely via smartphone. Including starting the engine to see the remaining mileage on the Hyundai electric vehicle, and asking for help in sudden conditions when needed.
