The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) is currently exploring the growing trend of “social commerce” (s-commerce) within our society. This involves buying and selling through social media platforms.

Budi Arie Setiadi, the Minister of Communication and Informatics (Menkominfo), mentioned that social commerce is currently categorized into two practices. One involves transactions facilitated by platforms, while the other involves private or direct interactions between social media users.

“We’re studying this exciting new phenomenon, while also aiming to safeguard the public from potential fraud. Our focus is on consumer protection and nurturing creativity,” Budi explained in his official statement on Friday, July 21st, 2023.

Budi highlighted that s-commerce is a novel concept where social media is used for buying and selling. To ensure a safe environment, the government is committed to upholding consumer protection and preventing fraudulent activities associated with s-commerce.

In the process of this study, Budi emphasized that banning social media-based transactions isn’t the immediate solution. Instead, Kominfo plans to collaborate with various sectors, including other ministries and institutions, to establish effective regulations that strike a balance.

“Our goal is to support entrepreneurial creativity. For example, some individuals sell homemade treats within small WhatsApp communities. Transactions like these need careful consideration and regulation,” he elaborated.

During the same event, Semuel A. Pangerapan, the Director General of Informatics Applications at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in private social commerce transactions. He advised everyone to double-check and read reviews before making purchases or sales to avoid falling victim to scams.

“It’s important to be aware that not all payments go through the platform. Always verify whether the person you’re dealing with is trustworthy. This way, you can steer clear of deception,” he concluded.
