Jakarta, Gizmologi – Indonesia is accelerating digital infrastructure development, among other things, infrastructure for 5G technology which have been commercially launched last year.

Minister of Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) Johnny G. Plate said that his Ministry keeps exploring cooperation with various parties to apply 5G technology, especially to develop smart cities and the New Capital, Nusantara.

“President Joko Widodo has a very firm policy in ICT development. We have been spending sizeable investments to bridge a digital divide for the rural areas. At the same time, we also want to catch up with the latest technologies, such as 5G,” he said during the meeting with Huawei Vice President Asia Pacific, Jay Chen, on the sidelines of the Mobile World Conference (MWC) 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.

Minister Johnny said Kominfo forges collaboration in the 5G application with all stakeholders.

“We welcome collaboration opportunity and knowledge sharing with global ICT providers, including Huawei,” he said.

According to the Minister, telco operators have started initial operation in 13 cities across Indonesia following the 5G commercial rollouts. Even, the government is now preparing radio frequency spectrum to democratize the 5G network.

“We will hold spectrum auction within this year. Our New Capital will be a fully 5G-supported capital city. Therefore we need to build ICT infrastructure to support the 5G operations of the autonomous city,” he asserted.

The Minister also said Indonesia will showcase the 5G experience during the G20 Summit in which the country holds the presidency this year.

“The G20 Indonesia presidency is a momentum to develop inclusive digital transformation,” he added.

Vice President of Huawei for the Asia-Pacific Region, Jay Chen expressed appreciation for the visit on Huawei’s booths.

“We would like to extend high appreciation for the visit of Huawei hall and having the fruitful discussion,” Jay Chen said.

According to Jay Chen, Indonesia is one of the most strategic partners for Huawei in the digital economy and digital transformation in the past few years.

“Indonesia is on the fast track of 5G technology adoption in which its full implementation and uses could be a game-changer and foundational solution, be it for smart cities, governance, transportation, mining sector, or healthcare,” he said.

He expressed Huawei’s support to Indonesia to realize digital transformation.

“Thanks to comprehensive research and development in 5G technology since 2009, we can be instrumental to support Indonesia in realizing the goal,” he said.

Jay Chen added Huawei would continue to contribute through its global experience in order to add value to the strengthening of Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, both through strengthening 5G and Cloud infrastructures, preparing digital talent, and other initiatives.

“Going forward, we could explore more into a collaboration to support the Indonesian economy and telecom industry to proceed further,” Jay concluded.

In the work visit at the MWC 2022, Minister Johnny G. Plate was accompanied by Director General of Resources and Equipment for Post and Information Technology (Dirjen SDPPI), Ismail, and CEO of the Accessibility Agency Telecommunications and Information Technology (Bakti Kominfo), Anang Latif.

Meanwhile, Vice President of Huawei for Asia-Pacific Region Jay Chen was flanked by senior executives, including Vice President, Huawei Marketing and Solution for Asia Pacific Region, Jason Tao, Global Government Industry Expert, Huawei Enterprise Business Group, Nadim Abdulrahim, and CEO of Huawei Asia Pacific CNBG, Dennis Xiao.

Before meeting the Huawei executives, the Kominfo entourage also had a brief tour at Huawei’s booths themed “DigiTelligent Forest” to ICT industry solutions. Minister Johnny also inspected 5G to business use cases, gigabit mobile networks, cloud-network “fast lines”, and comprehensive green development solutions.
