Again, Indonesian talent shows up not only in their own country.  At the 5 Min Video Challenge regional competition held in Singapore (22/11), representatives from Indonesia won the entire category.

There are two short videos that are included in the regional competition, namely “Chick-Chick” and “Sowan”. These two videos were previously selected to win the competition “Telkomsel 5-Min Video Challenge: Season 2” so as to represent Indonesia in the regional competition. They fought with other domestic winning videos which are Singtel’s operational areas from Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, and Gabon.

Telkomsel’s Marketing Director Alistair Johnston said Indonesia’s success as the premier winner of the 5 Min Video Challenge show that young Indonesians have great talent in the film world with quality work and are able to excel in regional competition. “This year also becomes very special because the Indonesian contingent can wipe the entire category,” he said.

Alistair also said Telkomsel consistently supports young Indonesians to continue to hone their potential and dare to display the work produced, especially in the form of video. “This is in line with the digital lifestyle that has been adopted by the community, where video content is more in demand and enjoyed through mobile platforms”, explains Alistair.

This year the jury of The 5 Min Video Challenge is Aaron Lea (Australia), Serge Abessolo (Gabon), Joko Anwar (Indonesia), Quark Henares (Philippines), Eric Khoo (Singapore), and Thitipong Kerdtongtawee (Thailand). The big names in the world of cinema, TV and video content eventually agreed to choose “Chick-chick” and “Sowan” as the best to outperform the 10 other participants.

The 5 Min Video Challenge Winner Video

1. Chick-Chick

The video, directed by Kevin Anderson, succeeded in becoming the first choice of the jury and rewarded with the title of Grand Winner with prizes of 30,000 US Dollars and Sony A7sii camera. The video also runner-up to People’s Choice Awards with prizes of 2,000 US Dollars, and won Sony’s Emerging Talent Award with Sony A7sii camera.

“Chick-Chick” tells the story of a little girl named Kara who must stay at her grandmother’s house because her parents are arguing and not talking to each other. There he became friends with a chicken and tried to communicate with the chicken by using a tin phone, which inspired him to try to improve the relationship between his parents.

2. Sowan

This short video presents a short story about a man who travels on a motorcycle. On the way, he found a problem in the local area, during which there was a conflict between farmers, collectors, and sellers in the market.

Sowan is made by Destian Rendra managed to come out as Runner-Up this competition. He is entitled to receive a prize of 15,000 US Dollars and Sony A6500 camera. In addition, the video that received the most public voting is also out to become the first champion in the People’s Choice Award with the prize of 3,000 US Dollars.

Have you seen the two winning videos of The 5 Min Video Challenge above? How do you think? In our opinion, both videos are indeed worthy of being a winner. They give a strong message backed with good cinematographic techniques.

If you feel you have a hobby of making video content, hopefully, next year the competition is held again. The 5-Min Video Challenge is a regional video competition that begins in 2016 and is the result of a collaboration of Singtel Group’s Singtel (Singapore), Optus (Australia), AIS (Thailand), Airtel (India and Africa), Globe (Philippines), and Telkomsel (Indonesia).

The competition is open to all filmmakers, both experienced in the film industry as well as beginners and lay people who feel challenged to create quality content that can arouse the attention of the public.

With the theme “Connecting Lives”, the competition challenges participants’ creativity and thinking to interpret the relationship between how we see the world and act every day with events that bring us to life’s important things. The 5-minute video can also answer questions about things that can separate or connect us to others.
