How Huawei Transfer the Technology to Indonesian Students with SmartGen Program

ICT transcends economic, social, and geographic boundaries. As the ICT industry grows, there is an urgent need for skilled people who can address the challenges of the ICT sector. After a dozen years of business in Indonesia, Huawei felt the need to contribute to advancing the sector of information and communication technology (ICT) in Indonesia. The latest, Huawei launch the SmartGen program, an initiative to develop the skills of young Indonesians studying ICT-related subjects at university.

According to Liu Haosheng, CEO of Huawei Indonesia, it believes the development of technology in a country depends on high-quality human resources. “As the ICT enabler, we believe strongly in the importance of the program transfer of knowledge through the training program to give birth to the young generation of Indonesia are promising. It is an honor for Huawei to work together with 7 leading universities in Indonesia to initiate the program SmartGen,” said Liu, at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Huawei Indonesia with the rectors of the seven universities in Indonesia (3/27) at BPPT Building, Jakarta.

Liu added that through the SmartGen program, the younger generation can have access to technology ICT is the latest and can be a force for developing the digital economy of Indonesia and to improve Indonesia’s competitiveness in the future.

SmartGen Program is one of the efforts made by Huawei to bridge the knowledge obtained by students in the college with the needs of the ICT industry. The company aims to boost the readiness of young Indonesians to compete for jobs amidst fierce global competition. Through this program, the students will have the chance to participate in various activities provided by Huawei:

  • Tech Day, Visit the University to share knowledge about the latest technology in the ICT industry
  • Huawei Experience Day, offer experience with Huawei’s ICT technology by inviting students to visit a Huawei Customer Solution Innovation and Integration Experience Center (CSIC) and face to face meeting with Huawei experts.
  • Smart Campus Consultancy, which will help the university to develop the initiative of Smart Campus with the support of experts
  • Seeds for the Future, a two-week training program for students to gain work experience and learn more about cross-cultural work in a global business environment in Beijing and Shenzhen
  • Student Internships, this program offers experience to equip students to enter the industry. Internships offer training in a combination of personal, core, and professional skills. Students have opportunity to be coached and mentored by respected and skilled Huawei professionals.

The inauguration of the SmartGen program witnessed by the Minister of ICT Rudiantara, the Secretary general of education, culture, Ainun Na’im, and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Xie Feng. In addition, it was attended by seven of the rector of the state university that did the signing, namely the University of Indonesia (UI), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Telkom University (Tel-U), Diponegoro University (UNDIP), Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS).

Before launching the SmartGen program, Huawei Indonesia has actively participated in developing high-skilled work forces, nurturing local talents and contributed to the local communities. To date, Huawei has established 1 ICT Training Center; and 1 Joint Innovation Center, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Informatics.

The tech giant from China has also trained more than 1,000 experts in ICT each year. As well as sent nearly 70 top students from 12 leading universities and polytechnics in Indonesia to be trained in China through its global Seeds for the Future program, and has trained over 300 local developers in e-commerce and mobile applications.
